How did you first get interested in tattooing and decide to open your own shop?
I apprenticed under Tony Olivas out of Atlanta in 1997 and honed my skills for 10 years before moving to Nashville. I took the reigns and opened Kustom Thrills in 2007 and have been operating out of east nashville for almost 18yrs now with 2 studios
What is your artistic background and how does it influence your tattooing style?
I have a bachelor's degree in art but I felt like I learned more about "art" apprenticing at a tattoo studio. Art college just showed me how to approach mediums. I learned more about how to put the passion behind it working with actual artists.
Can you walk us through your typical process when working on a new tattoo design for a client?
I typically don't like to overthink the process, I call it "thought fucking it to death". I like to get the client in after they explain their idea and let that magic happen in the moment. Keep it uncomplicated and most importantly, fun.
What are some of the most meaningful or memorable tattoos you've created for clients?
Every tattoo has a story to tell. I believe that tattoos tell a story in a way that no other medium can. They represent deep meaning to the bearer that can only be expressed as symbols etched into skin.
How has the tattoo industry changed since you first started out, and how have you adapted your business to keep up?
Tattooing used to be something for the lowbrow community, with the advent of TV shows and mainstream media, tattooing moved to the high street. It's important to stay ahead of the curve so I've learned to become a visionary over the years, and stay fluid.
What are some of the unique challenges of running a tattoo shop compared to other types of small businesses?
Two of the biggest challenges are one, trying to be unique and different from the rest of the local competition and two, dealing with the emotional range of artists. LoL Artists are complicated creatures haha if you're going to be a tattoo artist these days you better have a psych degree.
How do you find and cultivate a talented team of tattoo artists to work at your shop?
I'm a firm believer in attracting the right people around you. It's been more about manifesting the right energy than it was about looking for the right people. When an artist has a strong portfolio, I take a look at who they are. if they put off a negative vibe I have them kick rocks. It's been an effective hiring strategy.
Can you share some insights into the business side of operating a tattoo shop, like pricing, inventory management, and customer relations?
it's not that complicated, be good to people, do the right thing, don't overvalue or undervalue your work. We follow the industry standards in our area for pricing. As for inventory, that's not too terribly hard, but customer service is definitely something that needs constant cultivation, being aware of societal changes and pop culture help.
What role does social media and digital marketing play in promoting your tattoo shop and attracting new clients?
Social Media and digital marketing is probably the most important tool you can use as an artist.
Can you share some of the most rewarding aspects of being a tattoo artist and small business owner?
Meeting new people and hearing their stories has been the most rewarding. Many special friendships have come out of it all. Overall tattooing can be cathartic, sometimes it is exhausting though.
What are your thoughts on the increasing popularity of tattoos in mainstream culture, and how has that affected your business?
That's a double edged sword. The more popular it gets the more problems you have to solve, but the caveat is you make more money in the long run. I guess it all comes down to your world view of what you believe tattooing should be about. I try to stay ahead of the curve and carry on. Flow like ink from the needle!
How do you stay inspired and continue to evolve your artistic skills and tattooing techniques?
The axiom "Never Rest on your Laurels" rings true for me. I try to stay inspired by staying in the moment and looking for the beauty in all things. It's easy to find when you're looking for it. Too often we let ourselves become overwhelmed with life and start future tripping, and trauma rehearsing. By staying in the moment we can find inspiration in all things and use that for our expression of art.
Can you describe your typical day-to-day responsibilities as the owner of a tattoo shop?
Some days I feel more like a personal therapist and maintenance, haha but a typical day starts with being ready for the client and greeting them with enthusiasm. I just get into the creative mindset and start tattooing. Don't overthink things, that just creates more problems to solve.
What role does community involvement and giving back play in your business model?
Philanthropy plays a role in my life. We should all give back. Do it and don't tell anyone, that's the rule. Being kind without expecting anything in return will keep bringing you good energy...that's the payoff!
Where do you see your tattoo shop and the industry heading in the next 5-10 years?
I see a decline of tattooing from the public eye. It will slink back to the underground scenes a little more but it ain't going nowhere soon. It's the 2nd oldest profession by God! Haha! Meanwhile we will continue to be a driving force and leader in not only our community but our industry as well.
